The City of Prior Lake is a Statutory Plan B (council-manager) city, represented by five, at-large city council members (including the mayor) who serve four-year terms. Appointed by the City Council, the City Manager provides centralized direction and leadership for the effective operation of city services. The City Manager oversees day-to-day city operations, recommends the annual budget to the City Council, and implements City Council policy directives. The City is made up of six departments: Administration, Community Development, Finance, Fire, Police and Public Works. Each department head reports directly to the City Manager. The City Manager also leads long-term strategic planning efforts and represents the City at community events and on local boards.
Jason Wedel was appointed as City Manager in October 2019 by the Prior Lake City Council.
